Abstract

This dissertation examines the resilience of former foster youth in higher education, focusing on the perspectives of Independent Living Coordinators (ILCs) in Arkansas. The study explores the support systems and challenges that foster youth encounter, assessing factors that contribute to or hinder their educational success. Using a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews, it identifies key protective factors such as emotional support, stable mentorship, and institutional programs that promote resilience among foster youth. The findings suggest that tailored interventions and a strengths-based approach can significantly improve outcomes for this vulnerable student population. This research contributes to existing literature by offering insights from ILCs on practical strategies to foster resilience and facilitate the academic achievement of former foster youth. It further provides recommendations for policy-makers and higher education practitioners to develop targeted support frameworks, enhancing college retention and graduation rates for at-risk youth.
