Abstract
This article lays out a model contempt statute which combines civil and criminal contempt in one comprehensive statute; establishes the procedures to be followed for direct criminal contempt, indirect criminal contempt, and civil contempt; clarifies the sanctions that are available; provides an exclusive list of the acts of criminal contempt; authorizes compensatory civil contempt; incorporates Arkansas Supreme Court decisions regarding the public's access to judicial proceedings; and reflects constitutional standards. The statute does not make sweeping changes in current Arkansas law, but it should clarify for litigants, and the trial courts the power and procedure of contempt.
