Abstract
This article presents an overview of the substantive changes to the Bankruptcy Code in 1984 following the passage of the Bankruptcy Amendments and Federal Judgeship Act of 1984. The initial impetus for this legislative activity was the invalidation of the bankruptcy court's jurisdiction by the Supreme Court in Northern Pipeline Construction Co. v. Marathon Pipeline. While Congress was struggling to set up constitutional bankruptcy courts, however, numerous interest groups pressed Congress for additional changes in the Bankruptcy Code. As a result, the 1984 amendments not only set up new jurisdictional criteria for the bankruptcy courts but substantively changed numerous other Bankruptcy Code sections as well.
