The University of Arkansas has a long history of athletic competition, with its first intercollegiate games in football, tennis, baseball, and track and field starting around 1894. Originally known as the Cardinals, the mascot changed to the Razorbacks in 1909 after an undefeated season, a name popularized by Football Coach Hugo Bezdek.

The University of Arkansas athletics program is self-sustaining, funded through gifts, ticket sales, licensing, and broadcast contracts, without relying on state taxes or student tuition.
