The process of publishing research can be challenging but highly rewarding and can significantly enhance a student’s professional profile. All submissions will be reviewed by the Editorial Committee, which consists of several History faculty.

The OHR is published at the end of the Spring semester. Submissions and queries should be directed to the editor, Justin Gage (jrgage@uark.edu). The deadline for submissions is December 20.

Please consider submitting your research to the OHR!

  • Mar. 21 - authors resubmit fully edited drafts
  • Early May - OHR issue published

  • Submission Guidelines

Submissions should follow the Chicago Manual Style “Notes and Bibliography” conventions. Notes should be footnotes, not endnotes. Full citations on first instance; all other instances should be shortened notes. Do not include a bibliography.

Your manuscript should be around six thousand to ten thousand words long. The text should be double spaced, twelve-point font, Time or Times New Roman. The footnotes should use eleven-point font.

    Post submission process

Several weeks after submission, the Editorial Committee will notify authors with one of the following responses: 1) publish with minor revisions, 2) revise and resubmit, or 3) not publishable at this time. If the response is 1 or 2, an author will have time to revise and resubmit their manuscript.

This editorial process aims to cultivate excellence in historical writing and methodology. Articles will be edited to conform to the OHR style. The editors may also make changes to your text for purposes of clarity or brevity. Any major changes will be made in consultation with the author.
