Head of the Department: Micah Hale

The Department of Civil Engineering was unofficially established in 1897, with the first clear separation of civil and mechanical engineering and the awarding of the first undergraduate civil engineering degrees to four individuals in 1888.

Civil engineering provides solutions to today’s environmental, geotechnical, structural and transportation problems. Civil engineers plan, design, build, and operate projects for the advancement and well-being of society while coordinating and conserving human and natural resources.
