The Department of Industrial Engineering was founded in 1951 with John L. Imhoff serving as its first department head.

The field of Industrial Engineering is focused on decision-making, improvement and analysis. Often business-driven and people-oriented, industrial engineers are skilled at quantitative modeling, statistical analysis, computing, work systems improvement, economic reasoning, management and communications.
