Abstract
This study examines the significance of Blue Hen Mares and their impact on the development of the Thoroughbred racing industry. While breeding practices have historically emphasized sire lines, this review focuses on the role of maternal pedigrees that often go overlooked. Using a structured literature review methodology, this study analyzes peer-reviewed research and industry expert publications to identify patterns, recurring traits and genetic influence among prominent Blue Hen Mares. Key figures such as La Troienne, Almahmoud, Fall Aspen, and Rough Shod II are evaluated for their multigenerational and global contributions to successful bloodlines. The findings of this study suggest that these Blue Hens are foundational for their impact on the Thoroughbred breed as a whole as well as the racing industry. Furthermore, Blue Hens are correlated and intertwined with the most successful and prominent athletes within the Thoroughbred racing industry. Despite their significance, maternal lines remain underrepresented in both academic research as well as industry recognition. This study calls for a greater emphasis on dam lines and for a standardized adoption of criteria that defines and recognizes Blue Hen Mares within the Thoroughbred industry.
