Head of the Department: Terry Howell, Jr.

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at the University of Arkansas was established in 1920 and accredited in 1958. The first Ph.D. was conferred in 1984, and in 1988, the department was renamed to reflect its broadened focus. Further changes have included renaming the degrees to Biological Engineering in 2002 and introducing a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering in 2003.

The interdisciplinary research addresses water systems, food safety, and energy efficiency, aiming to improve quality of life and environmental stewardship locally and globally. The Department offers expertise through various centers such as the Water Resources Center and the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.
