Since its inception in 1871, teacher education has been a cornerstone of the University of Arkansas. Originally called the Normal Department (a term commonly used in the 19th century to refer to the imparting of norms of exemplary teaching), and comprising nearly 40% of the university's early enrollment, it has evolved over the years into the College of Education and Health Professions, reflecting a broad spectrum of academic and professional programs. Notable milestones include the establishment of the Bachelor of Science in Education in 1914 and the renaming of the college in 1997 to encompass its expanded focus on health education. Peabody Hall, a historic building integral to the college's legacy, underwent a restoration in 2011, preserving its architectural heritage.
