Founded in the 1870s under the Department of Agriculture, the science of soil and crops that began with the creation of the Department of Agronomy has evolved over the years. The department was renamed in the late 1990's to the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences to reflect its adaption to societal changes a curriculum that includes diverse courses in chemistry, physics, genetics, and more.
