Abstract
With the power to influence various sectors of society, art is a dynamic medium for instituting change. To explore the power of art and its impact on communities, I am organizing an event in Fayetteville, Arkansas called “Hogs for a Cause.” Hogs for a Cause would double as an art competition and a community fundraising event for local charities, ultimately taking a multifaceted approach to enhancing our community through public art. This project will serve several purposes: showcase the work of local artists, support local charities, and foster community engagement and development. I will be collaborating with the Community Creative Center, a local non-profit visual and studio arts organization, and Experience Fayetteville, the convention and visitors’ bureau for the city of Fayetteville, to promote and carry out Hogs for a Cause. Organizing and executing this project is dependent on securing the support of various entities and requires skills in creativity, adaptability, and persistence, as well as more technical skills such as marketing and promotion strategy, interpersonal skills, and project management. I believe that Hogs for a Cause is the type of project that could be implemented in various communities with only minor adjustments. In hopes of helping other communities do so, I have included within this thesis a generalized guide to starting a project like Hogs for a Cause. At the center of this project is an element of art that I have always loved: its ability to serve as a connector between individuals of all personalities, backgrounds, and ages, and between artists and non-artists alike. It is my hope that this project will appeal to the entire community and serve as a dynamic tool for encouraging community engagement and creativity.
