Homeplace: Instructions for Authors
The editorial team welcomes submissions from academic scholars, community scholars, and folklife enthusiasts, in a variety of media. Appropriate topics include – but are not limited to – foodways, folklore, arts and crafts, music, local history, local historic sites, and unique communities. In general, Homeplace does not publish original art, memoirs, family history, genealogy, fiction, poetry, or family letters. If you have an idea that doesn’t appear to fall under the scope of the magazine, please contact the managing editor, Melody Herr ().
All submissions must be original, i.e., not previously published or posted online.
There are no submission charges or publication charges. Please note that you will not receive payment for your publications in Homeplace.

For interviews, quotations, podcasts, and videos in languages other than English, please provide an English translation.
Please use the Notes-Bibliography style of the Chicago Manual of Style for all citations. The Purdue Online writing Lab (OWL) provides guidance on this style.
Peer Review
The editorial team sends scholarly submissions (refer to the list above) to peer reviewers qualified to comment on the factual accuracy of the work and offer suggestions regarding the presentation (e.g., readability, clarity, organization). Homeplace uses a single-anonymized review process, meaning that the reviewer’s identity is not revealed to the author, but the reviewer is told the author’s identity. The editorial team strives to prevent bias and discrimination in the evaluation of all submissions. If you have questions or concerns about peer review, please reach out to the managing editor, Melody Herr ().
Copyright
You retain the copyright to your work. If it is accepted for publication, you will be asked to sign the Author Agreement granting the University of Arkansas Libraries non-exclusive rights to publish it in Homeplace. All content in the magazine is open access, meaning that it is available for reading, viewing, listening, and downloading without charge. You are welcome to publish your work with a Creative Commons (CC) license, which allows additional uses. However, you are not required to apply a CC license.
If you include material under copyright (e.g., maps, photographs) that you did not create, you may need to obtain permission from the copyright holder.

Interviews, Surveys, and Research involving Humans
You are responsible for obtaining an interviewee’s permission to quote them and use information from an interview. If interviews, a survey, or other types of research involving humans were conducted under the sponsorship of a university or other research institution, you may need approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) before beginning your research.
You may need to obtain permission to publish photographs of humans.
