Director of International and Global Studies: Ryan Calabretta Sajder
The International & Global Studies program was first established in 1998 with 17 students pursuing a BA in International Relations in preparation for diplomatic careers. The program changed its focus in 2014 to International Studies to encompass a wider range of political, economic, and cultural interactions. In 2018, the International Studies and European Studies programs merged and added a global studies focus in response to growing global challenges. As a result, the U of A became one of the first public university programs to create a trans-regional focus on the Global South.
An interdisciplinary program, International & Global Studies faculty and students draw on multiple disciplinary perspectives to study the processes and outcomes of global integration, the theory and practice of international relations, and the dynamics of cultural exchange.
