University Libraries

The first library on campus was made up a single bookshelf inside the original temporary building constructed on campus in 1872. The library was then moved to Old Main when it opened in 1875. When John C. Futrall became president, he prioritized the development of the library, recognizing its critical importance. Under his direction the first library building, Vol Walker Hall, was built. His efforts laid the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone of the university’s academic resources. In 1968, the current main library, Mullins Library, was opened.

Today, the University of Arkansas Library boasts an impressive collection of 2.1 million volumes and over 56,000 journal titles, providing comprehensive research materials across all subjects. The library’s diverse resources also include several thousand maps, manuscripts, and more than 33,000 audio and visual materials, including music scores, recordings, and movies. For materials not owned by the University Libraries, the Interlibrary Loan service provides a convenient solution.

The University of Arkansas Library has grown from a modest bookcase to a comprehensive resource hub, reflecting the institution's commitment to supporting academic excellence and research. The library system of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, includes the David W. Mullins Library, the main research facility on campus, and four branch libraries:
