Craft & Contiguity seeks to bring Vance Randolph and Mary Celestia Parler’s research from textual and word-of-mouth investigations to tangible visualizations through the University of Arkansas’ Museum Collections and Special Library Collections and Archives. Randolph’s work primarily documented within his book, Ozark Magic and Folklore (1947) among additional publications within The American Journal of Folklore, provide a wealth of knowledge and tradition passed down from generation to generation. These heirlooms of insight ranging from medicinal remedies to superstitious sentiments, provide a cultural context for the Ozarks as a region both derived from the land and its people. Like Randolph’s, Parler’s research divulges a distinct culture within the Ozarks, primarily focusing on folksongs and ballads. Through the comparison of an object’s intended function and renewed use, Craft & Contiguity highlights the certain magic that infiltrates the daily lives of Ozarkers and influences everyday objects to become invigorated with the spirit of creativity
