Abstract

This project explores the traditional Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, examining how different wood species respond to charring in terms of durability, aesthetics, and material behavior. By combining research with hands-on experimentation, the study identifies the most resilient and visually effective wood species. The findings are applied to the design and construction of an outdoor seat that embodies the spirit of Japanese design, emphasizing simplicity, natural materials, craftsmanship, and harmony between form and function while demonstrating how traditional craft can inform sustainable and durable furniture.
