Department Head: Keisha B. Walters

The University of Arkansas listed its first Chemical Engineering curriculum in the 1903 university catalog, with the first graduate earning their degree in 1907. In 2014, the department became one of three sites for the Membrane Science, Engineering, & Technology (MAST) Center.

Chemical engineering deals with the creation, design, operation, and optimization of processes that derive practical benefits from chemical or physical changes primarily involving chemical and biochemical reactions. Broad in its scope, chemical engineering has historically provided the technology for: supplying energy and fuel; synthesizing materials such as plastics, chemicals, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals; and managing environmental and safety concerns of physical and chemical processes.
