Abstract
My thesis is a collection of poems about growing up in a small town. It is about looking for a sense of self in places and in others, and about understanding one’s relationship to religion and to work. Many of my poems are also about loneliness and separation. The title of my thesis comes from something my mother said to our family as she was serving homemade soup for dinner. She said, “watch out ‘cause there may be bones.” This struck me as a phrase that summed up our family, and especially my relationship with my mother. The title also refers to the poems that deal with guilt, whether that guilt comes from a failure to take care of a pet hamster or to report a friend’s eating disorder.
