Introduction to FAY DESIGN Virtual Education Series

For the past ten years, the FAYDesign Programs Design Camp has offered students aged 8-18 the opportunity to learn about the design professions through hands-on projects, tours, presentations and discussions led by faculty in all three disciplines from the Fay Jones School- architecture, interior design and landscape architecture. Students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and collaborate with peers in a fun and creative studio environment as they explore the design process. Expectations for Summer 2020 were to include a state-wide enrollment of 250-300 participants, over a seven-week period, in five locations in all corners of the state-Fayetteville, Little Rock, Hot Springs, Wilson and El Dorado.

While FAYDesign Summer Design Camps have been an ideal way for students to gain valuable hands-on experience, the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have caused us to rethink our approach. In the summer of 2020, we started FAY DESIGN Virtual Education to take the place of our in-person Design Camps, but also as a new program for us to provide online design education.

This series provides a virtual version of the discussions, field trips and projects that students experience during each of the school’s week long, in-person camp sessions. The 25 videos created are a mix of informational segments about the school and its programs, virtual tours of buildings, spaces and places throughout Arkansas and at the heart of the videos are a series of hands-on workshops that students can participate in along with us at home.
